RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

Institute of Biomedicine

The research activities of the Unitcover a broad spectrum of both human and animal physiology. The Unit has thirteen members of staff, together with some ten postdoctoral research workers and graduate students, all of whom are involved in research as well as teaching. Most of them are also members of the Institute of Biomedical research of the University of Leon.

Topics currently under investigation cover Hepatology, Physiology of Exercise, Nutrition, Feeding Behavior, Intestinal Absorption and Metabolism, Environmental Physiology and Biocomputing.

Current research is funded by the R+D National Program-Spain, the Spanish Ministry of Education, the Research Health Fund-Spain, The High Sport Council-Spain, the Junta de Castilla y Leon-Spain, the European Union. In addition to the research work carried out with public financing, various activities are also carried out by means of contracts with the pharmaceutical industry.

Research equipment includes several recording spectrophotometers and fluorimeters, several HPLC systems, several refrigerated centrifugues, treadmills for rodents and humans, several cycloergometers, several homogenizers, -80ºC freezers, a breath to breath gas analyzer, a biochemical analyzer, equipment for molecular biology, and numerous microcomputers connected to the WorldWideWeb.
